One person who meditated on the Holiness of God was Martin Luther. The more he studied, the more his soul was troubled, because he realized the holy demands of a righteous God. He had a great fear of God. He wanted assurance but he was very burdened by God's law. He grew to despise God because he realized could never be good enough in God's sight. The more he got in scripture the more he saw he could never personally be holy enough, be must rely on another by Faith alone. This flew in the face of the Roman Catholic view of faith in Christ plus our works. This sparked the reformation and a return to scripture and the true gospel.
