Ch 6: Holy Justice

Often when people come to the bible, there can be a misconception where people look at the God in the Old Testament and a mean God of wrath, while the New Testament God is a nicer and loving God. In our chapter today we consider passages in the Old Testament where God brings judgement and we will seek to make sense of it in light of his holiness. We will see, as Sproul says, that "We experience the grace of an infinite God, but grace is not infinite. God sets limits to His patience and forbearance. He warns us over and over again that someday the ax will fall and His judgment will be poured out." For those in Christ, God showers his grace on them, while still being justice and bringing his Judgement for sin, on our substitute, Jesus Christ. Please read Chapter 6 for our next meeting on 11/27.  This is one of the longer chapters, so we will likely do this in two parts. See you tomorrow at Fairmont at 6:30am.

Ch 5: The Insanity of Luther

One person who meditated on the Holiness of God was Martin Luther. The more he studied, the more his soul was troubled, because he realized the holy demands of a righteous God.  He had a great fear of God. He wanted assurance but he was very burdened by God's law. He grew to despise God because he realized could never be good enough in God's sight. The more he got in scripture the more he saw he could never personally be holy enough, be must rely on another by Faith alone. This flew in the face of the Roman Catholic view of faith in Christ plus our works. This sparked the reformation and a return to scripture and the true gospel. Read chapter 5 for T4B and we will plan on meeting at Fairmount at 6:30 on Wednesday Nov 13th.

Chapter 4: The Trauma of Holiness

What should be the proper response when confronted with the holiness of God? Too often the we can get caught up as if it is not a big deal. We tend to downplay who God is to make him more acceptable for people. When this happens we have an inaccurate view of God. In this chapter, we will see that the holiness of God is traumatic to unholy people. The pattern is people tremble in his presence. We see this is true even in the disciple's response when they saw Jesus' power over the elements..  Read Chapter 4 for our book study on Wednesday. Also read Mark 4:35-41 and Luke 5:1-8 for discussion. We will be meeting at Fairmount at 6:30am. They will be opening for us. See you then.

Chapter 3: The Fearful Mystery

The bible uses the word Holy in several different ways. We are called to be holy. Certain accepts of the temple were considered holy, and God is called Holy Holy Holy.  What does it mean to be holy when this attribute is applied to God? In chapter 3 we will discuss this topic. Please have chapter 3 read for Theology For Breakfast this week and lets marvel in it. BONUS: listen to this lecture by RC Sproul as he elaborates more on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K96e1tK7eN4
